IMPORTANT CHANGES AT THE CATTERY
Due to Beverley’s stroke in September a few things have changed at Bear Cottage.
One is that Sue, who already looks after the helpline, is now responsible for admissions and homings at the cattery. So in future PLEASE DO NOT CALL BEVERLEY ASKING HER TO TAKE CATS IN. Sue has an overview of all pens so ring her on the C.L.A.W.S. helpline on 01189 341699. At present, C.L.A.W.S. IS FULL. Thank you.

2014 was a turning point for C.L.A.W.S. During the summer of that year we took in 20 cats, 4 elderly ones whose owners could no longer look after them and 16, all about 2 years old, that had never been handled. In one fell swoop this doubled the number of cats we had in care and changed the focus of our work forever.
C.L.A.W.S. had always been known for its willingness to take in elderly, infirm and traumatised cats but the majority of its work had been re-homing cats. It soon became obvious that the new intake of cats would not be going anywhere for some considerable time.
This put an enormous strain on our resources. It led to the immediate conversion of the feral pen to house the 4 elderly cats and eventually to the construction of the two new enclosures for long term residents. In the meantime we had to accommodate them in existing pens and even use rooms in the house.
4 years down the line 3 of the 4 elderly cats (2 now 22 years old and 1 18 years old) are still with us and 11 of the traumatised cats have been brought round and found loving homes – an amazing achievement. The other five, although comfortable with people they know, will never adapt to life in a normal home so will stay with C.L.A.W.S. in the new enclosures which have been designed to closely resemble a domestic environment.
Throughout this turbulent period we have been encouraged by our loyal supporters, many of whom have been with us since 1995 when C.L.A.W.S. began. Thank you all !
